CanExport Innovation

The CanExport program program contains many funds and support services to help Canadian businesses break into global markets and participate in international trade shows to maintain larger customers and better opportunities in the world’s today economy.

To achieve such goals, CanExport will provide $50 million in five years of indirect financial support to SME (small and medium-sized enterprises), asking for help to reach out borders and try to develop new export opportunities.

CanExport is expected to Support over 10,000 exporters per fiscal year all over the country.

According to government statements, the CanExport SME’s program has accelerated over 3,000 projects in more than 145 markets, resulting in over $600 million in new exports since 2016

There is plenty of granting/funding programs suggested by the Canadian government to support and help Canadian innovators break into global markets.

Still, among all of them, CanExport Innovation is the most risk-based, general, and efficient one. It is designed for supporting innovative projects to explore and expand global markets over the borders.

The main reason that CanExport is different than other funding programs is that it includes much more flexible terms about cooperating with foreign partners as long as you regard them your partnership will be supported.

And those terms are:

• Foreign organization(s) which are being dealt with should take an amount of individual contribution in R&D related projects
• Your foreign partner(s) should not take part in any ineligible activity such as : distributing, accelerating or incubating your project in out-bordered markets
• Your partner organization(s) must not be related to the Canadian government in any way, including being a Canadian promoter or being wholly or in-part owned by Canadian organizations

• Applying for intellectual property (IP) protection in global markets
• Applying for certification or attestations in foreign countries
• seeking professional advice
• Shipping and transportation technology to maintain synchronization with foreign partners/investors
• Creating promotional contents, plans or materials
• Providing technological facilities to Attend or hosting virtual meetings or conferences

CanExport no longer covers all transportation expenses amid the covid-19 pandemic.

Still, even now, there are a few activities that are supported, including:

• Travelling abroad or in Canada to meet with a pre-identified foreign partner(s) or investor(s)
• Taking part in an event to meet with a pre-identified foreign partner(s) or investor(s)

If you have decided to apply for CanExport INNOVATION, your organization and your business plan should be deemed eligible for receiving canexport loans and grants.

for being “eligible” , your organization must have certain specifics

Your organization must be labeled as SME, or being a non-governmental research or educational center
Being a small or medium-sized business requires your company to :

1. Maintain less than 500 full-time employees
2. Having an annual revenue ranged from $100,000 to $100,000,000
3. Being registered in canada and having a canada revenue agency (CRA) business number
4. Other terms and conditions related to your business plan; including:
   • Having authority over the intellectual property (IP) rights for the technology
   • Having a valid prototype (Technology Readiness Level 4 or higher)
   • Intendancy for launching the technology within five years in open international markets
   • Be financially independent to pay back all the expenses
